Fresh US donation to cover classroom supplies for Sendong victims

THE United States announced it will provide additional funds for the emergency procurement of classroom furniture and equipment, reference materials, education supplies, and student kits for the victims of the storm Sendong.
The additional fund, worth $1.9 million (P83.9 million), will also bankroll the repair of damaged schools and small-scale infrastructure projects "to help restart economic activity in the affected barangays [towns]," US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr. said.
The 'latest humanitarian gesture' will bring the US government's total donation to $2.8 million (P123.6 million) to flooded areas of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City.
The donation will be coursed through the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid), Thomas said.
"USAID’s assistance will be used to support continuing relief operations as well as early recovery and rehabilitation efforts to help disaster victims get back on their feet and reclaim their lives," he added.
The US government will also distribute clean water and hygiene kits through funding from Catholic Relief Services and Plan International.
Aside from its financial assistance, USAID is also collaborating with the Department of Health in providing health awareness materials “to ensure the well-being of flood victims housed in evacuation centers.”
“We will continue our coordination with concerned Philippine Government agencies to identify areas where the US government can provide further assistance,” Gloria Steele, USAID mission director to Manila, said in a statement. (CVB/Sunnex)
