Penal colony detainee who escaped recaptured

MANILA -- A detainee who bolted a penal colony in Puerto Princesa City last Friday has been recaptured.

Allan M. Abadillo, 33, resident of Malolos City, Bulacan, was apprehended on September 4 by the Philippine Coast Guard and port police after trying to escape a security compound of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan.

6 injured in 36-hour Manila mall fire

MANILA -- The fire that has burned a mall in Manila's shopping district of Divisoria since early Wednesday has injured some fire personnel and volunteers.

The National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said the fire has injured six people while eight others suffered from suffocation or had difficulty in breathing.

NASA Dawn spacecraft traveling to dwarf planet

LOS ANGELES — NASA says the Dawn spacecraft is journeying to its next destination after spending a year at a giant asteroid.

The space agency said Wednesday it received a signal from the spacecraft confirming that it left the asteroid Vesta and is cruising toward the dwarf planet Ceres where it will arrive in 2015.

7.6-magnitude quake rocks Costa Rica

NOSARA, Costa Rica — A powerful, magnitude-7.6 earthquake shook Costa Rica on Wednesday. There were no immediate accounts of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the 8:42 a.m. quake struck about 38 miles (60 kilometers) from the town of Liberia and 88 miles (141 kilometers) west of the capital, San Jose. It was centered about 25 miles (41 kilometers) below the surface,

Facebook stock up on Zuckerberg's no-sale pledge

NEW YORK -- Facebook's stock is up following a disclosure that its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, won't sell stock in the company for at least a year.

Zuckerberg holds about 504 million shares and options and had been eligible to start selling them in November. The company currently has about 692 million shares eligible for sale. The concern is that if Zuckerberg floods the market with additional shares, prices would go down further.

Blaze guts mall in Manila

Pirates seize oil tanker, kidnap crew off Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria -- Pirates attacked and seized an oil tanker off the coast of Nigeria's largest city, the country's navy said Wednesday, kidnapping an unknown number of sailors who were trying to hide from their assailants.

The pirates targeted the MT Abu Dhabi Star, which was anchored 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Lagos, the country's biggest port, said Commodore Kabir Aliyu, a spokesman for Nigeria's navy.

1.5 carat meal: Man swallows diamond in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A man visiting a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka's capital swallowed a 1.5 carat diamond in front of the owner and was taken by police to a hospital, where an X-ray showed the $13,000 stone inside him.

Exhibitor Suresh Wijekoon said the man was behaving suspiciously at his stalls and when he reached closer to the suspect, the man suddenly swallowed the diamond at his hand before Suresh alerted police at the exhibition venue.
