Al-Jazeera show's Twitter account hacked

LONDON — The Twitter account of Al-Jazeera's English-language social media show has been hacked by supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Hackers hijacked the Twitter account of "The Stream," a program aimed at tapping into online audiences. The account featured links to pro-Assad material Thursday.

Malware may knock thousands off Internet on Monday

WASHINGTON — The warnings about the Internet problem have been splashed across Facebook and Google. Internet service providers have sent notices, and the FBI set up a special website.

But hundreds of thousands of people around the world may still lose their Internet service Monday unless they do a quick check of their computers for malware that could have taken over their machines more than a year ago.

SC affirms indictment of Ampatuan son in massacre case

MANILA -- The Supreme Court (SC) affirmed the Court of Appeals decision ordering the inclusion of detained former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) governor Zaldy Ampatuan in list of accused in the Maguindanao massacre case.

In a resolution dated June 25, 2012, the SC's Third Division junked the petition filed by Ampatuan, which sought for his exclusion from the 57 counts of murder filed against his father, former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., and several relatives.

August 2 declared as holiday in Butuan City

MANILA -- President Benigno Aquino III has declared August 2, which falls on a Thursday, as a special (non-working) day in Butuan City in celebration of its "62nd Adlaw Hong Butuan."

Aquino issued the declaration through Proclamation 383 to give the people of Butuan City the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.

Philippines protests China city claiming disputed sea

MANILA (Updated 5:27 p.m.) -- The Philippine government has protested China's move to place virtually the entire West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) under the jurisdiction of a newly created city.

Department of Foreign Affairs officials summoned Chinese Ambassador Ma Keqing in Manila on Wednesday and handed her a note protesting China's recent establishment of Sansha city, which would have jurisdiction over all disputed territories in the potentially oil- and gas-rich region.

Panda born at Tokyo zoo for 1st time in 24 years

TOKYO — A panda has been born at a Tokyo zoo for the first time in 24 years.

Tokyo's popular Ueno Zoo said the panda was born Thursday to Shin Shin, a 7-year-old brought to Japan from China just before Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami last year.

5.3-magnitude quake hits Sarangani

CEBU CITY -- A 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit the province of Sarangani in Mindanao around 4 p.m. Thursday, state seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its latest bulletin that the quake's epicenter was located 157 kilometers southeast of the province.

Communist rebels raid mine, seize 3 men

MANILA -- Communist rebels have raided a gold mining company in the southern Philippines and demanded weapons in exchange for releasing three hostages.

Armed Forces spokesperson Major Eugene Osias said about 30 New People's Army (NPA) rebels stormed into the VTO Mining company office in Rosario tow, Agusan del Sur early Thursday and seized the owner's son and two employees.

Inflation rate hits 2.8% in June

MANILA -- The Philippine inflation rate slowed down further to 2.8 percent in June, well within the central bank's forecast of 2.5-3.4 percent, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said on Thursday.

The June inflation rate was slightly lower from the 2.9 percent in May, the BSP said, adding that this brought the year-to-date average inflation rate to 3.0 percent, which is at the low end of the government's inflation target range of 3-5 percent for 2012.
