12 senators proclaimed

MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed Saturday night the final set of winners of the May 13 senatorial race.

Completing the so-called "Magic 12" are Team PNoy's Cynthia Villar and party mates JV Ejercito Estrada and Gregorio Honasan of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

Villar, Estrada, Honasan to be proclaimed tonight

MANILA -- All 12 winning senatorial candidates have already been proclaimed by Saturday evening after the recent tally showed Cynthia Villar, JV Ejercito Estrada, and Gregorio Honasan firmly holding on the last three spots.

This developed after the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), composed of members of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), received the last provincial certificate of canvass from Lanao del Norte, which has nearly 500,000 voters for the May 13 polls.

Comelec assures proclamation of winning Senate bets tonight

MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is not yet sure if it can proclaim all the three remaining winning senatorial candidates on Saturday night.

"We will push through with the proclamation tonight. But I don't know how many," he told reporters at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

Taiwanese investigators end Philippine visit

MANILA — Taiwanese investigators left the Philippines Saturday, expressing dissatisfaction with Manila's cooperation in probing the shooting death of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippine coast guard.

Investigating team leader Chen Wen-chi, director of Taiwan's Department of International and Cross-strait Legal Affairs, read a statement Saturday that said evidence showed the May 9 shooting was intentional. It also said Philippine law enforcers ignored international protocol, including warning the Taiwanese vessel.

US commuter trains collide; 60 go to hospitals

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut — Two commuter trains serving New York City collided in Connecticut during Friday's evening rush hour, sending 60 people to the hospital, including five with critical injuries, Gov. Dannel Malloy said.

About 700 people were on board the Metro-North trains when one heading east from New York City's Grand Central Station to New Haven derailed about 6:10 p.m. just outside Bridgeport, officials said.

Charges filed vs ex-bank president

MANILA -- Criminal charges were recently filed against the former president of closed First Country Rural Bank, Inc. (First Country Bank) for conducting business in an unsafe and unsound manner.

The complaint, which was filed with the Department of Justice, alleged that Hans Paulo Bulos, made unrecorded back-to-back loans worth P10 million from December 2009 to May 2010 with third party banks to increase the bank's capital.

Comelec: Nothing wrong with early proclamation

MANILA -- Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes said there is nothing irregular with proclaiming nine of the 12 winners of last Monday’s senatorial elections even if there are still millions of uncanvassed votes.

"There is nothing wrong if we advance the proclamation, which is actually better," he said on the sidelines of the proclamation of three other senatorial bets on Friday night.
