Strong rains could trigger landslides in Baguio

THE weather bureau warned residents of Baguio City against landslides due to strong rains brought about by the low pressure area (LPA) spotted east of the Bicol region.
State weather forecaster Wilson Locando said Tuesday although the strong rains are not continuous, the volume could be enough to affect erosion-prone areas in the city and suburbs.
As explained before by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), most of the areas vulnerable to erosion in Baguio City include those along Kennon Road, which is still being rehabilitated due to the effects of the 1990 Intensity 8.7 earthquake.
Earth removal in constructions, absence of vegetation in steep mountain sides, including those within fault lines, are likewise prone to erosion.
Motorists along Kennon Road, Marcos Highway and Quirino highway already reported some minor falling of rocks apparently due to the start of the strong rains.
Despite this, police checkpoints have informed that all access roads towards this mountain resort 250 kilometers north of Manila remain passable. (PNA)
