Arroyo 'sad' over guilty verdict on Corona

MANILA (Updated 1:55 p.m.) -- Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was saddened over the fate of her appointee, ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona, after 20 senator-judges found him guilty for not properly disclosing his assets.
"I will be hypocrite to say that she's happy. Of course, she's sad," House Deputy Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, one of the co-chairmen of Arroyo's Lakas-Kampi party, told reporters in a press briefing.
Arroyo appointed Corona as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 2002 and as Chief Justice in 2010. Corona's appointment as Chief Justice was heavily criticized after this was made only two days after the 2010 presidential elections.
On Tuesday, 20 of the 23-member Senate found Corona guilty of Article 2, which alleges his failure to truthfully declare his assets and net worth.
Suarez said she will visit the former President, who is currently detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center for electoral sabotage charges, Wednesday night.
"But right now, I think the former President is suffering from a lot of problems. The paramount issue is her health," Suarez added.
Suarez earlier confirmed that Arroyo needs to undergo treatment abroad because of a life-threatening condition. The former President had already undergone three cervical spine surgeries. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
