WITH their guns blazing, National University (NU) had an easy time disposing lowly University of the East on Saturday, 90-55, making it the most lopsided opening basketball match of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) in eight years.
The previous record was the game between Far Eastern University and UE, 89-61, on July 10, 2004.
Playing without former league MVP Emmanuel Mbe in the first half due to incomplete uniform, NU dropped 48 points as opposed to UE’s 23 to dictate the game.
The Warriors, holder of 18 rings, never recovered from there, giving up as high as 40 points in the payoff canto.
"We're very happy, we played well collectively and everybody stuck with the game plan, and overall it was very consistent as far as our game is concerned," coach Eric Altamirano told reporters at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jeoffrey Javillonar finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds while reigning tournament MVP Bobby Ray Parks came up with 16 points and six boards. Shei Roi Sumang dropped 21 markers to lead the Warriors.
The Bulldogs, one of the favorite squads to win the 75th season apart from defending champion Ateneo de Manila, had a comfortable run with all of the 16 players given their respective minutes.
Organizers placed the gate attendance at 17,761.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
