Creation of sports department sought
Monday, June 25, 2012 - 11:15 a.m.MANILA -- Only through the creation of a department that fully devotes itself to the development of sports in the country can the Philippines snatch its first-ever Olympic gold medal after a string of failures, a senator said over the weekend.
In filing Senate Bill 3092 or “An Act Creating the Department of Sports,” Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said the abolishment of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) should give way for higher funding and better grassroots program.
NKorea slams US, SKorea use of flag in war drills

2 low pressure areas may become cyclone
Monday, June 25, 2012 - 09:34 a.m.MANILA -- The weather bureau said on Monday that there are two weather disturbances hovering inside the country that might become a cyclone.
Weather forecaster Lenny Ruiz said one low pressure area (LPA) was spotted at 380 kilometers (km) east of southern Luzon, while the other LPA was estimated at 930 km east of northern Mindanao.
Heavy rains kill at least 16 in China

The official Xinhua News Agency said Monday that the heavy rains over the past three days had affected 450,000 people and wiped out crops in the southern Guangxi region. Another more than 730,000 people were affected in the southern province of Jiangxi, and 312,000 were affected in the adjacent manufacturing powerhouse province of Guangdong.

Several missing after roof collapse at Canada mall
Monday, June 25, 2012 - 01:16 a.m.ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario -- Rescue teams and dogs searched through the rubble Sunday at a shopping mall in Canada where a roof collapsed through two floors, leaving several people missing and 22 people slightly injured.
Authorities said no casualties have been reported and the names of the missing continue to be crossed off the list as members of the community account for their loved ones. But a number of people remain unaccounted for since the collapse Saturday afternoon at Algo Centre Mall in the northern Ontario city of Elliott Lake.
Weather disturbance in Southern Luzon may become cyclone

Aldczar Aurelio said the LPA was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 800 kilometers east of Southern Luzon as of 2 p.m. Sunday.
Quake in southwestern China kills 2, injures 100

The magnitude-5.7 quake was centered near the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces where many Yi ethnic minority live, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. It said the casualties occurred in Yunnan's Ninglang county and Sichuan's Yanyuan county, where many houses collapsed.

Infant rescued, kidnapper nabbed on board ship off Leyte

The suspect was identified as Rose Gallrado Sabandal, 19, who allegedly abducted the infant, the PCG said.
