MANILA -- A policeman died following an attack staged by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Datu Unsay town in Maguindao on Friday night, a military spokesman confirmed Saturday.
Col. Prudencio Asto, 6th Infantry Division public affairs officer, said an undetermined number of BIFF fighters attacked forces of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Special Action Force around 11:30 p.m at the vicinity of Maitumaig village, resulting in the death of Police Officer 1 Randy Dumaguing.
Asto said the 1st Mechanized Brigade had directed its Echo Battery “to provide indirect fire support to the engaged troops of PNP-SAF”.
The BIFF is a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) which is negotiating for a peace accord with government.
The BIFF was established in 2010 by former MILF commander Ameril Umbra Kato who bolted out of the MILF due to ideological difference with top MILF officials.
Meanwhile, an explosion rocked Crossing Awang village in Datu Odin Sinsuat town, also in Maguindanao at around 7:50 p.m Friday.
Asto said the improvised bomb was placed by unidentified suspects at an electric post. No one was reported killed or injured.
He said military bomb experts promptly rushed to the scene and conducted post-blast investigation. (VR/Sunnex)
