Another typhoon enters as "Igme" exits to Taiwan

MANILA - A new typhoon, with international code name "Beloven," is expected to enter the country by Thursday morning as Typhoon "Igme" (international name: Tembin) continued to move towards Taiwan, the state weather bureau said.
Typhoon "Igme" is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday afternoon.
Gener Quitlong, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather forecaster, said that once “Beloven” entered the PAR, it will be locally named as "Julian," the country's 10th tropical cyclone this year.
Julian, with maximum winds of 140 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph, was located at 1,470 kilometers (km) east of extreme northern Luzon.
Quitlong said the chance that the two cyclones would interact with each other (“Fujiwhara effect” or “dumbbell effect”) inside the Philippines was slim since the two cyclones are too far from each other.
The Fujiwhara effect is characterized by two cyclones orbiting each other.
Quitlong said Julian has a small chance to make landfall but it would likely pass near northern Luzon in a path different from Igme's.
Julian is expected to move northwest towards South Korea or Japan and out of PAR by Saturday or Sunday.
However, Quitlong noted that Julian is still expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will induce occasional light to moderate rains in Metro Manila, Luzon and Visayas, particularly over its western section, while it hovers inside the PAR.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said that as of 10 p.m. Wednesday, Igme is located 285 km northeast of Basco, Batanes. With maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center gustiness of up to 160 kph, it is expected to move west northwest at seven kph towards Taiwan.
Public storm warning signal number 2 was raised over Batanes Group of Islands, as these areas will experience 61 to 100 kph winds within the next 24 hours, the state weather bureau said.
Pagasa said the island of Batanes would experience stormy weather with its coastal waters becoming rough to very rough.
Estimated rainfall amount within the 500-km diameter of the typhoon is from 10 millimeters (mm) to 20 mm per hour, which is classified as “moderate-heavy,” Pagasa added.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. (PNA/Sunnex)
