UN, US ask Filipinos not to leave Golan Heights

MANILA -- The Philippines' top diplomat said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry have appealed to Manila not to withdraw more than 300 Filipino peacekeepers from the Golan Heights to avoid "maximum volatility" in the restive Middle East region.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Wednesday the diplomats made the appeal to him in separate recent talks.

Government rejects calls not to relocate informal settlers

PUBLIC Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson said Wednesday that the government would no longer heed any call of some local government units (LGUs) to suspend the transfer of informal settlers to other places four months before the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.

Some LGUs had requested not to transfer informal settlers who were clogging the major waterways in Metro Manila before the May 13 elections.

Village bets given 3 days to file COCs

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) set three days for individuals interested to run in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls on October 28, 2013 to file their certificates of candidacy (COC).

Filing of COC will run from October 15 to 17, followed by the nine-day campaign period, according to the calendar of activities stated under Comelec Resolution 9715.

Better selection of SEA Games sports pushed

Embassy officials involved in OFW abuse to return home

Three Philippine Embassy officials were ordered Wednesday to return to the country and face investigation on their alleged involvement in the forced prostitution of distressed female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Also asked to fly back to the Philippines are the heads of embassies in Kuwait, Damascus in Syria and Amman in Jordan, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said after meeting Akbayan Representative Walden Bello, who exposed the alleged sex-for-repatriation practice on Tuesday.

5 killed in NPA attacks in Agusan del Sur

Police Superintendent Martin Gamba, public information officer of police Caraga region, said Wednesday the rebels attacked a rubber plantation in Sitio Camarangan, Barangay Hawilian in Esperanza town around 10 a.m.

Gwen Garcia arrives at Capitol

CEBU (Updated 5:06 p.m.) -- Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia showed up at the Cebu Provincial Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, two days after her 180-day suspension ended.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) regional legal officer Aiza Fiel Nogra said Garcia's suspension ended Monday, June 17, adding that she was supposed to resume office in June 18, Tuesday.

Tornado injures 3 in Talisay
