DAVAO CITY (2nd Update) -- Police said Sunday that a grenade attack on an Army outpost in this city has wounded at least 37 people who were watching a nearby circus performance.
Paquibato District Chief of Police Romeo Abler said a man hurled the grenade toward the outpost but it hit a protective net and bounced toward dozens of villagers watching a nearby circus around 9:25 p.m. Saturday in Barangay Fatima.
Abler told The Associated Press by telephone on Sunday that 37 villagers were wounded by the powerful blast and a stampede that followed. At least three were in serious condition in a hospital.
The police have intensified security measures in the area, with more members of the Armed Forces deployed to Paquibato to coordinate with barangay officials and tanods (village watchmen), said Abler.
Communist rebels are active in the remote region but an investigation has not yet clearly pinpointed who may have carried out the attack, according to Abler. (AP/Sunnex)
