Laguna highway accident kills 2 police chiefs-A A +A

TWO police officials died, while another policeman was hurt, in an accident along a highway in Calauan, Laguna, the country's disaster risk reduction council reported on Tuesday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the accident happened around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday at Barangay Bangyas in Calauan town, Laguna province.
The fatalities were identified as Police Senior Inspector Alex Mendiola Marasigan, Victoria Police Office chief; and Police Chief Inspector Santiago Carag Cuntapay, Calauan Police station chief.
Police investigation showed that Marasigan and Cuntapay were fixing and loading bicycles at the back of their patrol car when a passenger utility jeepney rammed them.
The jeepney, driven by Leonilo Salva Resurrection, 52, was coming from Victoria Laguna going to Bay when the accident happened.
Resurrection, in a television interview, said he tried but failed to control the steering wheel when his vehicle swerved towards the patrol car parked at the right side off the road.
Marasigan, a resident of Barangay Bañadero, Calamba City, died on the spot.
Cuntapay, a resident of Garden Villas, Barangay Labas, Sta. Rosa City, sustained head and foot injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but died four hours later.
Police Officer 2 Redel Reyes Cardel, 38, was also injured in the mishap. He was rushed to the hospital and is now in a stable condition. (Sunnex)
