MANILA -- Only Banco de Oro (BDO) is adamant to give details of the dollar accounts of former Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato C. Corona.
The said details will be used by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to amend the tax evasion case it has filed against the ousted Chief Justice.
According to BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares, almost all the banks where Corona has dollar accounts have confirmed that they will give details which the BIR had earlier requested from them.
Henares said that many banks have replied to their request pertaining to the foreign accounts of the former chief justice.
Likewise, Henares said that the BDO who refuses to give the details of the dollar accounts of Corona has a pending petition for declaratory relief before the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC).
The BDO argued that dollar accounts are covered by the "absolute confidentiality rule" on foreign accounts.
It was learned that Corona has withdrawn his waiver to open his dollar accounts after the impeachment trial against him.
The BIR has filed a P120.5-million tax evasion case against Corona, while his daughter and son-in-law were charged with a P30-million tax evasion case. (PNA)
