MANILA -- La Salle finally stopped years of frustration in women's taekwondo after it nipped University of the Philippines, 4-3, on Tuesday in the 75th UAAP season at The Arena in San Juan City.
Middle-heavy Ynah Langit defeated Bettina Someros, 11-4, to provide the decisive win for the Lady Archers but before this, they trailed the Lady Maroons, 1-3, going into the fifth encounter.
Lightweight Jyra Lizardo blanked Marigold Taculog, 13-0, while welterweight Patricia Gonzalez beat Cyrmyn Perlas, 8-2, for La Salle.
"To win it, we have to beat the best teams in the league. The matches are difficult for us and I’m really grateful that the team to pull through this year. It’s a collective effort for everybody," said coach Stephen Fernandez.
La Salle nailed its fifth women's title for sweeping the six elimination games. The Taft-based jins last won the crown in 1998.
The Lady Maroons only placed fourth with a 3-3 record but their male counterparts are poised to bag the title for the first time after carrying an immaculate 5-0 slate.
The Maroons were battling the University of Santo Tomas Tigers on Tuesday night, hoping to clinch the championship also via sweep. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
