MANILA -- Tropical Depression "Lawin" is not yet expected to affect any part of the country although rains will still be experienced in Luzon because of intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), state weather forecasters said Thursday.

Lawin, previously an active low pressure area east of Southern Luzon, was spotted at 910 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes as of 4 p.m. Thursday carrying center winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Moving westerly at 7 kph, the storm is expected to be 740 km east of Virac by Friday afternoon, 570 km east of the same town by Saturday afternoon and 660 km east of Infanta, Quezon by Sunday afternoon.

"It's still too far for us to determine its impact but there is a big chance that it will make landfall in Luzon," senior weather forecaster Mario Palafox told Sun.Star.

Pagasa estimated the rainfall amount from 5-15 millimeters per hour (moderate to heavy) within the 300-km diameter of Lawin, the 12th storm to visit the Philippines this year.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
