Comelec office in Benguet opens early on last day

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The offices of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Province of Benguet opened early Friday to accommodate the expected dozens of candidates filing their certificates of candidacy (COC's) for the May 2013 elections.
Provincial Elections supervisor Elenita Tabangin said the "last day of filing" is a mode normal in this province with 13 municipalities where people are busy in their multi-million agriculture and mining industries.
As of Wednesday, the prominent names in the local politics in the province who include incumbent Provincial Governor Nestor Fongwan, Benguet Congressman Ronald Cosalan and Benguet Vice Governor Cresencio Pacalso have filed their respective COC's.
Pacalso has posed a challenge to Cosalan in the lone Benguet congressional seat, while Fongwan still has to know who would challenge his present post.
Like Baguio City, local politics in Benguet in all previous elections were peaceful and orderly.
As hoped by Fongwan, the same shall be observed in this province which has two major ethnic tribes: the "Ibalois" in the southern part and the "Kankaneys" in the north. (PNA)
