Mass production of Calungsod image still a work in progress

THE number of images and statues of Blessed Pedro Calungsod remains limited even a week before his canonization, an official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Sunday.
CBCP Assistant Secretary General Fr. Marvin Mejia said they are still working on mass producing the official image of Calungsod to make it available to the public.
“We cannot mass produce it right away because we are talking here of not just hundreds but thousands,” he said.
Calungsod, along with six others, is set to be canonized on October 21 in Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI. He will be the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz.
Mejia said that Calungsod’s image can now be purchased in some specialty stores, Catholic bookstores and selected parishes.
He also said that a restaurant at the first floor of the CBCP office in Intramuros, Manila, the Ristorante Delle Mitre, is now selling an image of the Visayan martyr.
He said the image on sale is the one created by a sculptor from Paete and was approved by Cebu Archbishop emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
Mejia described the image as being “very Filipino” since it is of brown color.
“The right foot is forward as if he is moving to depict his dynamism being a catechist, missionary. He is also holding a copy of the Doctrina Christiana and a palm leaf, which is the symbol of his martyrdom,” the priest added.
The statue is available in four different sizes and is being sold from P1,800 to P8,500 depending on the size. (HDT/Sunnex)
