MANILA -- A sub-leader of the extremist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was arrested in Central Mindanao, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday.
Director General Nicanor Bartolome, PNP Chief, identified the Abu Sayyaf leader as Sali Basal Taib, who is known by the aliases Gonggong Sali and Abu Husni.
Taib was arrested near the Barangay Wal Primary Schol in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, shortly before noon on Tuesday by intelligence operatives of Task Force Sanglahi-A Mindanao Team.
Bartolome said Taib is a principal suspect in the abduction of 10 workers of the Golden Harvest Plantation in Lantawan, Basilan, in June 2001.
A Regional Trial Court branch in Isabela City, Basilan, issued Taib's arrest warrant for kidnapping for ransom and serious illegal detention.
Taib carries a P3.3-million bounty on his head.
Bartolome said a confidential informant gave the vital details that led to Taib’s arrest. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
