BACOLOD CITY -- A 20-feet whale shark or “butanding” was found dead off the coast of Barangay Tabao, Valladolid town, Negros Occidental Wednesday, Municipal Environment Natural Resources Office (Menro) officer Candy Motin said.
Motin said the “butanding” was trapped from the fishnets owned by the fishermen at Barangay Tabao Wednesday morning.
Motin said the Bureau of Fisheries Aquatic Resources (BFAR) advised them to bury the whale shark at Barangay Paloma, Valladolid.
She said, three years ago, they also found a “butanding,” but such is the biggest that they found in their area.
Domingo Liang, a fisherman, reported, when they checked their fishnets, they were shocked when they saw the butanding trapped in their fishnets, but it was already lifeless.
Liang said they immediately informed the local government officials about the incident.
Meanwhile, Motin advised fishermen to immediately inform the local government officials if they encounter a butanding in their barangay. (Merlinda A. Pedrosa)
