MANILA -- Two student athletes competing in a provincial tournament reportedly drowned in a beach resort in Misamis Occidental, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Saturday.
The PCG Action Center in Manila identified the two victims as Gerald Jay Penarejo and Renz Estanero, both 14 years old and residents of Barangay Digson, Bonifacio in the said province.
The PCG reported that the two student athletes, along with two others competing at the Palarong Panlalawigan, went on swimming at the vicinity of Plaridel Beach around 5:30 a.m. on October 19. More than an hour later, Penarejo and Estanero reportedly went missing.
Around 8:30 a.m., Penarejo's body was recovered at the shoreline in Barangay Kauswagan, Plaridel, and was brought to a hospital but announced dead on arrival.
Authorities conducted a search and rescue operation for Estanero but yielded negative results.
The search operation was also temporarily terminated due to big waves and strong winds prevailing in the area. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
