Ex-fire officials convicted for ghost spare parts

SEVEN former officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection and a private individual will spend up to 10 years in jail for buying P6.5-million motor vehicle spare parts which were never delivered to the agency in December 1992.

Found guilty of graft charges by the Sandiganbayan Third Division were former BFP director Mario Tanchangco, and ex-officers Aristeo Argosino, Leonardo Sabellina Jr., Hilario Cachero, Romeo Camacho, Veronica Cataluña and Emmanuel Macabuhay, and Analyn Cuesta-Rubio, owner of private company Lyn Cues Enterprises.

Spurs take 3-0 lead, beat Grizzlies 104-93 in OT

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The San Antonio Spurs rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 104-93 in overtime on Saturday and move a win away from the NBA Finals.

The Spurs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals and now have won five straight this postseason. With the memory of blowing a 2-0 lead a year ago in the West finals to Oklahoma City, when they lost the next four, the Spurs shook off their sloppy play early and pushed the young Grizzlies to the edge of elimination in the first West final played in Memphis.

11 killed, 16 injured in Myanmar bus accident

YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar state media said a bus traveling from Yangon to Mandalay has skidded off a bridge, leaving 11 dead and 16 injured including an American citizen.

State newspapers reported Sunday that the accident occurred Saturday when a tire on the bus blew, causing the vehicle to skid and plunge off the bridge into a stream below.

Doubters of poll results asked to review source code

Suspected rebels kill 17, wound 24 in east India

NEW DELHI — About 200 suspected Maoist rebels set off a land mine and opened fire on a convoy of cars carrying local leaders and supporters of India's ruling Congress party in eastern India, killing at least 17 people and wounding 24 others, police said.

Senior police officer M. Gupta said the attack occurred Saturday in the Sukma area, about 215 miles (345 kilometers) south of Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh state.

Repeal of RH law up to lawmakers: Palace

MANILA -- Members of the incoming 16th Congress are free to propose amendments or even repeal the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Law if they want to, Malacanang said Saturday.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the comment following reported statement of the newly-proclaimed Buhay Hayaang Yumabong (Buhay) party-list group that its representatives would move to repeal the RH law.

17 children killed in Pakistan gas cylinder blast

ISLAMABAD — At least 17 children were burned to death in eastern Pakistan on Saturday when a faulty gas cylinder exploded on the bus taking them to school, police said.

Police officer Mohammed Rasheed said seven children were also injured in the explosion on the outskirts of the city of Gujrat.
