Negros Oriental to host 2013 Palarong Pambansa-A A +A
Sunday, November 4, 2012
NEGROS Oriental bested neighboring province of Negros Occidental to earn next year’s hosting rights for the biggest sporting event in the country, the Palarong Pambansa.
Secretary Armin Luistro of the Department of Education (DepEd) said the decision was made after a “tedious selection and deliberation process” taking into consideration the presentations made on October 19 and the report provided by the technical committee composed of department officials and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Negros Oriental, with Dumaguete City as capital, received 11 votes from the Palarong Pambansa Board, while Negros Occidental got seven endorsements. There was also a tied vote, said Luistro.
For the deal to be finalized, Negros Oriental has to submit a formal letter of commitment to host the games, indicating the Provincial Government's offer of counterpart funding. A memorandum of agreement has to be signed as well to firm up the roles and obligations of DepEd and the Provincial Government.
"As an overall assessment of both bids, we are very, very happy that both provinces presented themselves as very ready for Palaro 2013. If it is possible, we would have two hosts for Palaro but since that is not possible, the committee had to choose one," said Luistro.
The Palaro hosting rotates each year among the country’s three major geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
