DAGUPAN CITY -- The pilgrim image of San Pedro Calungsod, the patron saint of the youth, is now on the way to San Fernando City, Pampanga after a brief stop-over in two Catholic schools in Pangasinan.

That was after a night vigil attended by thousands of devotees at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Dagupan City starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a mass at 5:30 a.m. the next day and a warm send off at 6:30 a.m. Monday enroute to the Binmaley Catholic School, St. Charles Academy in San Carlos City and the Malasiqui Catholic School.

The image of San Pedro Calungsod arrived Sunday in Dagupan City at 4 p.m., placed on a transparent box case on top of a top-down mobile van that came from Manaoag town where it made a brief stop-over after coming from San Fabian town.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas of the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese led those who welcomed the image .

From Manaoag, throngs of Catholics lined up the streets for a chance to see and wipe their handkerchiefs to the image of the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz.

The devotion was spontaneous, many of the women and youth spotted with teary eyes after learning the martyrdom of San Pedro Calungsod at the age of 17 while in the company of Jesuit priest in Marianas Islands.

One said he was gratified after seeing the image and fervently prayed that San Pedro Calungsod would take care of his father who just died and his mother who is sick.

Devotees from various barangays of Dagupan came to pray and keep vigil with the image when it made an overnight stay at the cathedral, the seat of the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese.

Students of Saint John Cathedral High School in Dagupan, noting that San Pedro Calungsod is the patron saint of the youth, were among thousands who formed long lines from the church onto the streets for a warm send off of the image to Binmaley early today.

Pangasinan is very lucky because it was only among two provinces in Northern Luzon where the image of San Pedro Calungsod paid a visit. The other is Ilocos Sur. (PNA)
