ZAMBOANGA CITY - Suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits staged a grenade attack in the island province of Basilan, injuring two policemen and a civilian, a police official said Tuesday.
Senior Inspector Kenneth Balisang, commander of the Lamitan City police force, said the incident took place around 11 p.m. Monday at a police detachment along Rizal Avenue, Lamitan City, Basilan province.
Balisang did not disclose the names of the victims except in saying that the two policemen were members of the Special Action Force (SAF) and the civilian is a passerby.
Balisang said the policemen were conducting inspection on passing motorists when one of two suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits riding in tandem on a motorcycle passed by and tossed a grenade into the detachment.
Before the incident, there was an intelligence report that members of the Abu Sayyaf bandits are going to pass along Rizal Avenue, and this prompted policemen to conduct checkpoint, Balisang said.
The police forces were placed on heightened alert following the grenade attack, he added. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
