DOH: Decrease in firecracker injuries not enough
-A A +AWednesday, January 2, 2013
THE Department of Health (DOH) still has a long way to go in their goal to achieve zero incidence of firecracker-related injury even with the 17 percent decrease of injuries due to firecrackers this year, an official said.
Earlier, DOH Secretary Enrique Ona announced that on December 21, 2012 there were a total of 413 firecracker-related injuries, 85 cases short compared to 498 injuries posted last January 1, 2012.
According to Ona, this is still too far from their target to achieve a zero firecracker-related incidence.
The secretary admitted that campaigns to reduce injuries and fatalities related to firecrackers are yet to be improved and still not enough.
He said that they have learned a lot from their campaigns and would improve those strategies next year.
Ona is also thankful for the efforts of various government officials and people from the DOH, including the media, which helped in decreasing firecracker injuries. (Sunnex with wire reports)
