CEBU CITY -- The one-week Sinulog Idol singing competition culminated Thursday night with Claro "Chingkie" Maylon Jr., a second year AB Music student of the University of Southern Philippines, emerging as the grand champion.
Maylon, 21, of Naga, Cebu, will take home P15,000 and gift certificates worth P5,000 courtesy of Dole.
His winning piece was the song "Angels Brought Me Here" by Guy Sebastian.
Named first runner-up is Alden Asejan, while Dan Escasinas III is the second runner-up. Asejan received P10,000, while Escasinas got P7,500.
Twelve contestants, mostly college students, joined this year's competition.
Apple Abarquez, one of the judges of the contest, said they had a hard time deciding who will be this year's grand champion. She said the final result was based on the performances of the contestants in the whole competition, and not just in the grand finals night.
Maylon was also hailed as Star of the Night during the Bisaya Category round (third elimination night) last January 13. He sang "Sa Imong Paglayo".
The competition judges noted that it was the first time that the top three finalists were all males. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
