Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits Eastern Samar

A MAGNITUDE 5.5 tremor shook Eastern Samar Saturday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The earthquake, which is tectonic in origin and has a depth of 51 kilometers, hit Balangkayan, Eastern Samar around 9:48 p.m. Saturday, the Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs located the quake's epicenter at 15 km southwest of Balangkayan.

Intensity 5 quake was felt in Borongan and Llorente towns in Eastern Samar; Intensity 4 in Tacloban City, Palo City and Basey, Western Samar; Intensity 3 in Abuyog, Leyte; Intensity 2 in St. Bernard in Southern Leyte; and Intensity 1 in Surigao City. (Sunnex)
