MANILA -- Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Vice Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Noel Coballes has been designated as the next commanding general of the Philippine Army, the position vacated by the military's newly appointed head.

Coballes will formally assume his new position on Tuesday afternoon during the change of command ceremonies in the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

He will be replacing Lieutenant General Emmanuel Bautista who formally assumed last week as the new AFP chief of staff.

A former chief of the Western Mindanao Command, the 54-year-old Coballes served in several areas in Mindanao for more than 14 years and held various positions.

He was designated as the AFP vice chief of staff on October 2012.

Coballes is a member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1980. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
