THE number of fatalities due to the effects of the tail-end of a cold front increased to 10 after incessant rains triggered floods in several areas in Mindanao in the past weeks, the state disaster agency reported Saturday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the latest victim as Rosario Trimidal, 70, a resident of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur who died due to drowning.

Still missing are Ramon Ampong, 63 of Barangay Sumlon; Asuncion and Renante Finca, and Gary Galicia, residents of Mansalay Oriental Mindoro.

The tail-end of a cold front started to affect Mindanao in January 15, bringing continuous heavy rains which triggered flash flood incidents in some provinces in the past several days.

At least 15 barangays in Davao City and the municipality of Tubod in Agusan del Norte were placed under state of calamity.

The NDRRMC reported that as of Saturday, the said weather system has affected 113,938 families or 507,769 people in the provinces of Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and Surigao Del Norte.

Nearly 54,000 people are still inside evacuation centers due to the flooding.

The cost of damages incurred from the tail end of a cold front has reached P111.7 million, damaging agriculutural properties and 278 houses in the Davao, Soccsksargen, and Caraga regions while rendering five roads and one bridge impassable due to flooding. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
