PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III welcomed the release of two Filipino television crew of Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani who have been held by the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) since June last year.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said President Aquino has been apprised by the unexpected release of cameraman Ramil Vela and audio technician Roland Letrero and “he was glad to hear the news.”
The two were freed around 7 p.m. Saturday in Jolo, Sulu.
Valte said the two were already in the custody of the Philippine National Police and they will soon be reunited with their families.
Atyani, who works at Dubai-based Al Arabiya network, remains missing. Reports said he is still in the hands of the ASG.
However, Malacañang said reports on Atyani’s whereabouts are still unconfirmed.
“We will leave the operational details to our security forces to share with the public as they deem fit,” Valte said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
