MANILA — Philippine officials said a Filipino crewman has been fatally shot in a pirate attack on a chemical tanker off the coast of Nigeria.

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said Wednesday the crewmen's local employment agency confirmed the Marshall-islands flagged tanker Pyxis Delta was attacked Monday.

He said a Filipino was shot and was pronounced dead. The other eight Filipinos "are safe on board the ship which is anchored off the coast of Nigeria."

Hernandez said the department has no other details.

The International Maritime Bureau in Malaysia said Monday that pirates approached and fired at a chemical tanker off Lagos. An onboard naval security team drove away the attackers, but an injured crew member later died. (AP)
