Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger or Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he is resigning on February 28, 2013 as he lacks the strength to fulfill his duties. He is the first pontiff in 600 years to resign.
Benedict called his choice "a decision of great importance for the life of the church."

Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal was saddened by the news. He told Sun.Star Cebu Monday evening, however, that the pope’s decision should be respected.
"He feels he is not fitted for the modern world," he said, adding Pope Benedict was already very weak during the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod in October as he had two people assisting him.
