Poll chief assigns acting division members

MANILA - Chairman Sixto Brillantes of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has been given the leeway to reorganize the membership of the two divisions handling cases and other petitions following the retirement of two commissioners early this month.
Comelec Resolution No. 9636 amended the previous practice of allowing the most senior commissioner from the other division to fill in the vacancy in the other division.
This developed since retired Commissioners Rene Sarmiento and Armando Velasco were from the first division, leaving Commissioner Lucenito Tagle alone.
“A permanent vacancy in the ranks of the commissioners in a particular division shall be filled by the Chairman by designating a commissioner from the other division in an acting capacity… in addition to his duties as regular member of his current division,” said the resolution.
As a result, Tagle will temporarily serve as its presiding commissioner with Commissioner Christian Robert Lim serving as the other first division member.
On the other hand, Commissioner Elias Yusoph has been elevated as presiding commissioner of the second division with Commissioner Grace Padaca as member.
The Comelec is an independent constitutional body with seven members. (HDT/Sunnex)
