MANILA -- More than 400 people were rescued from a vessel that ran aground on Saturday morning while navigating in Talisay, Cebu.
Reports reaching the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Action Center in Manila reveal that MV Trans Asia 9 was on its way to Cebu pier from Cagayan De Oro City when it hit a shallow part of Lawis Ridge, Cebu around 6:35 a.m. because of low tide.
Commodore William Melad, PCG Distict Cebu Commander, immediately sent rescue personnel to the area to assist and evacuate the passengers.
The PCG said 364 passengers and 72 crew members were on board the stranded vessel, which was able to pull itself out from its grounded position around 9:35 a.m. and continue its voyage to Cebu pier with PCG personnel escorting the ship.
The vessel safely arrived at Cebu pier around 10:23 a.m.
It sustained no damage due to the incident, according to an initial assessment made by PCG safety inspectors. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
