PDEA seeks mandatory test on college athletes

ALL collegiate athletes should undergo mandatory drug testing after two varsity players of a university were recently caught in possession of marijuana, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Sunday.
“I believe that college basketball players are covered by the drug-testing procedure, but on a one-time basis just before the start of the league,” said PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac Jr.
He said there should be a more systematic drug-testing program for all athletes.
Two members of the Far Eastern University (FEU) men's basketball team were spotted last week by patrolling police allegedly smoking pot at the corner of Nicanor Reyes St. and Claro M. Recto Ave., near their campus in Manila.
When frisked, the two yielded dried marijuana leaves, which were found in their pockets.
“Sports is a constructive force in developing one’s character and in promoting the ideals of clean living. Hence, leaving no room for illegal drugs,” Cacdac said. (SDR/Sunnex)
