MANILA -- Before entering the court with her teammates in De La Salle University women's volleyball team on Wednesday, veteran Michelle Gumabao felt that Ateneo de Manila will not be able to spoil the party.
Gumabao proved herself right as the Lady Spikers won their third consecutive crown in the UAAP via sweep, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16, while leaving the Lady Eagles still searching for a breakthrough tiara.
"Sinabi talaga sa amin ni coach (Ramil de Jesus) since nag-start this season na kaya namin manalo. Before coming to the Mall of (Asia) Arena, we conditioned our minds and we really believed na kaya namin mag-champion and we did it. It was very rewarding," she said.
Although she posted only six points in Game 2 of the best-of-three title series, that did not deter her from clinching the Finals Most Valuable Player award before nearly 18,000 fans.
"Ito na yung fruit of labor ng mga bata lalo na ng mga senior players na ga-graduate like Melissa Gohing and Wensh Tiu," said de Jesus, who has been the team's mentor for 15 years.
Tournament co-MVP Ara Galang, meanwhile, said she is now feeling the pressure of keeping the crown for the green and white community next season.
"Siyempre dapat smooth na yung galaw at dapat yung tiwala sa sarili mas buo," she said.
Galang still has three playing years. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
