VATICAN CITY (Updated) -- Cardinals from the around the world finally elected the new leader for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, as white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney around 2 a.m. Thursday (Philippine time).
Church bells at the St. Peter's Basilica rang to welcome the good news, while thousands of people who braved a chilly rain on Wednesday cheered, as they watched the white smoke billow from six-foot- (two-meter-) high copper chimney on the chapel roof. Nuns recited the rosary, while children splashed in puddles.
The new pope, whose identity remains unknown as of this posting, is expected to appear onto the balcony of the Sistine Chapel in his papal white cassock within an hour.
About 115 cardinals under age 80 participated in the conclave, which started Tuesday evening (Philippine time). (AP/Sunnex)
