MANILA (2nd Update, 12:14 p.m.) -- Camiguin Representative Pedro Romualdo passed away early Wednesday morning at the age of 77.
The lawmaker succumbed to a bout with pneumonia while confined at the Makati Medical Center, the House of Representatives Secretary General said in a text message.
Viewing of Romualdo's remains will be at the Assumption in Araneta Avenue Wednesday afternoon, the text message said.
Romualdo, a member of the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), was running for re-election in the May 13 elections against Nacionalista Party’s Homobono Adaza.
On its Twitter post, the NPC called the late Camiguin lawmaker "a great public servant."
"Our condolences to the family of NPC Camiguin Lone District Representative Pedro Romualdo, a great public servant who passed away this a.m.," the NPC said.
Romualdo is a vice chairperson of the House committee on justice and a member of eight other committees.
The late lawmaker is known for his strong opposition to the freedom of information (FOI) bill. In the 14th Congress, Romualdo objected to the ratification of the proposed FOI law as he questioned the lack of quorum.
Romualdo had successfully blocked the ratification of the FOI bill, a step needed to enact the proposed law.
Romualdo's colleagues, meanwhile, took to the social media their condolences for the lawmaker's family.
