MANILA -- Vice President Jejomar Binay received on Monday towering Yao Ming, a Chinese man who is more than two feet taller than the Philippines' second most powerful person.

During their meeting at the Coconut Palace in Pasay City, the 5-foot-2 Binay told 7-foot-6 Yao that the Philippines and China share the same interest in basketball.

The Vice President also hoped that Yao, who is in the country to handle basketball clinic and exhibition games with Filipino cagers, will visit the Philippines again.

Yao, 32, played 10 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), retiring in 2011 because of foot injuries. He now owns the Chinese pro team Shanghai Sharks.

His visit is part of the Philippines-China Years of Friendly Exchanges (YFE) agreed upon by Philippine President Benigno Aquino III and former Chinese President Hu Jintao in 2011. Yao's group will leave Manila on Thursday. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
