PASSES for the first pre-season game in Southeast Asia featuring teams from the National Basketball Association (NBA) may fly off the shelves by the end of August, an official of venue partner Mall of Asia Arena said.

Nicole Deato, MOA Arena marketing and sponsorship head, said 10,200 tickets or 71 percent of available passes have already been sold as of Monday. Cheapest tickets worth P550 were gone in 15 minutes since these went on sale on June 16.

She said 700 tickets per section are still available for basketball fans nationwide who want to personally witness the match between the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers on October 10 in Pasay City.

"My concern is that you know how Filipinos are. Unfortunately, a lot of us are last minute (buyers). I'm looking at selling everything by the end of August," Deato told reporters on Tuesday.

To drum up support for the event, NBA brought in former Pacers star Sam Perkins, who kicked off the 100-day countdown for the historic game through mall visits and participation in programs prepared by the NBA and SM Group.

Perkins said holding regular NBA games in the country is a possibility depending on the turnout of the pre-season match.

The 52-year-old Perkins owns an NCAA championship ring, an Olympic gold medal, and reached the NBA playoffs in 13 of his 15 pro seasons.

He also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Seattle Supersonics, and the Los Angeles Lakers, where he nailed a last-second trey for the team's lone victory in the 1991 championship series against the Michael Jordan-bannered Chicago Bulls.

Rockets stalwart James Harden will also be in Manila from July 26 to 28 to facilitate the NBA 3-on-3 tournament with 2009 All-Rookie Second Team selection Eric Gordon of the New Orleans Pelicans. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
