MANILA -- The low pressure area off Batanes intensified into Tropical Depression "Maring" Saturday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
In its 5 a.m. advisory, Pagasa said Maring was last spotted at 230 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.
Batanes was placed under storm signal number 1.
Pagasa said Maring is projected to move east at 7 kph and may be 390 km northeast of Itbayat, Batanes by Sunday morning.
Maring may bring rainfall of 5 to 10 mm per hour within its 200-km diameter, it added.
The tropical depression may enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms over the western section of Northern and Central Luzon.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Caraga, and Northern Mindanao may expect heavy rain that may cause floods and landslides. (JK/Sunnex)
