ZAMBOANGA CITY - Seven soldiers were wounded when they tripped on a landmine while on security patrol in the hinterlands of Compostela Valley province, an official said Tuesday.
Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Captain Alberto Caber said the incident took place around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in sitio Lantaan, Napnapan village, Pantukan, Compostela Valley.
Caber said the soldiers were on security patrol, passing on a human trail when they accidentally tripped on an improvised bomb fashioned as a landmine planted by the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.
Caber said the place of the incident is known to be an NPA-infested area in the province of Compostela Valley.
The identities of the soldiers were not immediately available and Caber said they were airlifted to a military hospital in Davao City.
He said the troops have intensified the conduct of security patrol following complaints from the residents of extortion by the NPA rebels.
Eastmincom commander Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III has ordered the troops to inspect the trails and road networks that are regularly used by the communities to ensure the safety of the civilians.
Cruz described the use of landmine by the NPAs as a desperate move of the rebels to prevent the troops from conducting patrols in the communities. (Sunnex)
