A RETIRED police officer is in critical condition after he was shot by an unidentified man around 10 a.m. Thursday.
The victim, identified as retired Senior Police Officer 4 (SPO4) Wilferdo Espina, 65, married, and resident of Tres Berces, Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, was walking along Almendras corner F. Cabahug St. in Barangay Mabolo when the still unidentified suspect shot him.
Espina sustained a gunshot wound on the left side of his head from a .38 caliber revolver. He was brought to the Perpetual Succour Hospital, where he remains in critical stage as of this posting.
The family of the victim refused to give a statement, but said they too were shocked by what happened.
Also surprised by the incident, SPO1 Witzel Berry, investigator of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) homicide section, said Espina was a happy and a good policeman.
PO1 Michael Angelo Singson said they will ask for a copy of recorded videos from closed circuit television cameras of the United Coconut Planters Bank and the neighboring establishments in the area to identify the suspect.
Investigators have also been asking for cooperation from the victim’s family to know if Espina received death threats in connection with the cases he was holding prior to his retirement from service.
Espina was assigned at the CCPO record branch during his term. (Jerson B. Rufin and Akimie R. Losorata, PIT interns/Sunnex)
