Manila’s envoy to Beijing returns home for consultation-A A +A
Friday, September 6, 2013
AMID the revival of the heated territorial dispute over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), Philippine Ambassador to China Erlinda Basilio is back in the country.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Basilio is in the country to meet with officials of the department.
"She was asked by the DFA to come home for consultations," said DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez in a phone interview.
Her return to the country comes on the heels of the discovery that China has placed concrete blocks at the disputed Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal).
The DFA had already disclosed its plans to file a diplomatic protest against China over the said incident, which happened amid the ongoing arbitration case between the two countries.
However, Hernandez belied reports that Basilio was recalled by the DFA amid the renewed tension between China and the Philippines.
Proof of this, he said, is the fact that Basilio's return to Beijing is already set.
"She will be returning to Beijing in a few days," assured Hernandez. (HDT/Sunnex)
