Strong quake strikes off Batanes-A A +A

MANILA -- A magnitude 6 earthquake shook Batanes and nearby provinces Friday evening but no damage has been reported, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred at 7:33 p.m. 42 kilometers southeast of Uyugan, Batanes. It has a depth of 183 kilometers, said Phivolcs.
Residents in Uyugan felt the quake at intensity 4, while those in Laoag City, and Ivana and Sabtang in Batanes felt it at intensity 3.
Intensity 2 was felt in Burgos, Ilocos Sur; and Basco and Mahatao, Batanes; and intensity 1 in Itbayat, Batanes.
Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected following the tremor.
The first aftershock, though, was reported at 8:21 p.m. Friday. It has a magnitude of 2.8 and was located 37 kilometers southeast of Uyugan. (Sunnex)
