ZAMBOANGA CITY (Updated)-- Fire broke out amid the sporadic firefight between government forces and rebels loyal to Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding-leader Nur Misuari in this southern port city.
The fire broke out shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday in Barangay Sta. Barbara, the site of the firefight.
The area where the blaze occurred is just near the Sta. Barbara Elementary School where most, if not all, of the houses were already unoccupied since residents have fled to safer grounds following the clash Monday.
Most of the houses in the area were made of light materials and closely built to each other.
Four fire trucks from the Bureau of Fire Protection's Zamboanga City Fire District rushed to the fire scene, but could not put off the blaze as they were stopped by the soldiers since the clash continues.
Government and MNLF forces had been exchanging fire since early Tuesday, the second day of the crisis that virtually shut down the city.
A separate report by the Philippine Information Agency in Western Mindanao said some residents in the area were in a panic.
"(Some) folks in the area in panic, one woman went crazy when she saw her barangay is being 'burned' down," it said.(Bong Garcia/JK/Sunnex)
