POLICE in Badian, a town located 98 kilometers (km) southwest of Cebu City, launched a manhunt operation against a "habal-habal" driver who left his passenger after they bumped into a passenger bus Tuesday morning.
The habal-habal (motorcycle) driver was identified as Reynaldo Gerson, while his passenger 49-year-old, Olimpia Osing, married, and a resident of Barangay Malhiaon, Badian, Cebu remained in critical condition in a hospital, as of this posting.
Police Officer 1 (PO1) Apollo Concepcion of Badian Police Station said the accident happened around 10 a.m. Tuesday at the highway of Barangay Malhiao.
Investigation revealed that Gerson was driving along the highway with Osing as passenger when he overtook a Ceres bus that stopped along the road to get a passenger. The bus was bound for Cebu City.
While overtaking the bus, the motorcycle driven by Gerson bumped into another Ceres bus (economy-class), which was coming from the opposite direction.
Police said that based on witnesses' accounts, Gerson still managed to jump off the motorcycle before it was hit by the bus. Gerson fled, leaving Osing behind.
Osing was then rushed to a hospital in Badian, but was advised to transfer to a fully-equipped hospital in Cebu City due to her critical condition.
The driver of the Ceres bus identified as Tirso Abrea was temporarily detained at the Badian Police Station while waiting for charges to be filed against him by the victim's family.
The passengers of the economy-class bus were transferred to another bus. (Jerson B. Rufin and Akimie R. Losorata, PIT interns/Sunnex)
