KABUL, Afghanistan -- A tunnel collapsed in a coal mine in Afghanistan, killing at least 24 workers, officials said on Sunday.
Provincial government spokesman Sediqullah Azizi said three people remain missing, while 20 others were injured.
The accident happened Saturday in Ruyi Du Ab district of Samangan province, one of the safer parts of the country from the standpoint of insurgency-related violence.
A police official said more than 1, 000 residents in the area rushed to help in rescue operations using shovels.
Mine collapse is common in the country because of the poor workplace safety standards.
The government hopes to develop a wealth of mineral resources on its territory, a challenging goal as it battles a Taliban insurgency. (AP)
