Brillantes: Signs point to intense barangay polls-A A +A
Tuesday, September 17, 2013
IT WILL not be hard to predict that the forthcoming barangay elections will be much more intense compared to the midterm polls last May based on the chaotic registration of voters and early presence of election-related violence.
This was the assessment of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes ahead of their command conference with the Philippine National Police (PNP).
"Parang may mga signal na tayo na may mangyayari sa October 28 na mainitan na labanan. Marami kasi ang interesado maging kapitan e," said Brillantes.
He noted how there is already an election-related violence in Gapan, Nueva Ecija with the start of the election period not until September 28.
"Dahil sa barangay registration kaya binaril e. Hindi ata pinalipat yung isang candidate e," noted Brillantes.
The poll chief also pointed that the personal relationships among candidates could also prove to be a factor.
"'Yung away sa barangay is within the same community so they are very close. Nagiging personalan so mas mahirap bantayan ito," said Brillantes.
The Comelec is set to conduct the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls on October 28 unless Congress finalized the postponement of SK elections. (HDT/Sunnex)
